Butterfly valves are favorable solutions mainly because they are lighter, easier to install, and less costly than other types of valves. These advantages allow them to not only be used as shut-off valves but also under certain working conditions, as control valves.
Butterfly valves do not have a linear flow characteristic (equal percentage of opening angle and flow rate) so for optimal travel at the main operation flow, the range of opening should be between 50° and 70°. It is important to not use the valve below 20° for long periods of time as the disc will be eroded due to high flow velocity.
Butterfly valves as control valves
Centric butterfly valves can be used as control valves under the following working conditions:
Low differential pressure (around 1 bar delta-p)
Opening range of between 20° and 70°
Valve and pipe size small differentiation (less than ½ the DN of the pipe)
Medium rangeability, the ratio between the minimum and maximum controllable flow rate, varies from 1:15 for a centric-disc butterfly valve to 1:35 for a triple offset butterfly valve
